Plan interstate journeys to arrive by late afternoon. Most highway ambushes and kidnappings occur on rural roads after dark — consistent across US and UK advisories.
Avoid flagging down informal taxis. Verify checkpoints look legitimate — unmarked 'checkpoints' on supply routes are flagged by the FCDO.
Tell a trusted contact your route, vehicle details and expected arrival time. Share live location on trips through higher-risk areas and agree a check-in time.
Avoid flashy clothing, jewellery and visible expensive phones or laptops in traffic. Kidnappers size up targets; 'wealthy-looking' vehicles attract attention.
Avoid fixed daily schedules for commutes, school runs and errands where possible. Predictable patterns make ambushes easier.
Don't resist physically — survival comes first. Note details (voices, routes, landmarks) for later. Families should seek security advice before negotiating ransom.
Keep car doors locked and windows up in traffic. Leave a gap ahead at junctions so you can move. Stay alert at banks, ATMs and poorly lit areas after dark.
Perimeter gates, good lighting, guards where affordable, and knowing your neighbours. Estate/community WhatsApp groups are genuinely useful early-warning networks.
Don't post real-time location, travel plans or expensive purchases publicly. Verify WhatsApp calls impersonating police or relatives through a known number before acting.
Know the exits. Avoid lingering at large unsecured gatherings, markets or places of worship during heightened threat periods.
Use bank transfers and POS instead of carrying large cash sums — criminals monitor customers leaving banks.
Save 112 (national emergency), your state police command's numbers and your embassy's line. Keep phones charged, carry fuel and water on long trips.
